Who’s Got the Exercise Blues?

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

With winter still in full tow, I find it more difficult than usual to peel myself from the comfort of my cushiony couch and leave the confines of my toasty apartment.  Admittedly, since moving to New York City, I have become a big homebody and prefer staying home and doing one of five things: cooking, eating, watching my TV shows, reading, and writing.  I rarely ever take the initiative to go for a jog just because.

I recall a time when jogging was actually fun and not a chore.  I lived with my family in a friendly, tight-knit suburban community in Orange County, California, and I loved taking my dogs on walks around the neighborhood.  Going for a walk or brisk jog was something I never enjoyed, but the smiles on my dogs’ faces were well worth the effort.  From there, it progressed to going to the gym with my two best friends, then hiking beautiful trails with views of the ocean and a quiet coastal breeze that cooled you down after an hours-long trip through the canyons.   I became a nature fanatic, and the feeling of accomplishment far outweighed my innate laziness.  I was excited to get back in my exercise groove, but then it hit me: New York City is way freakin’ colder than Orange County is.  The cold weather was the biggest deterrent keeping me from exercising outdoors.  I even bought the 5-toe shoes with hopes of changing my anti-jogging attitude.  Unfortunately, they didn’t work out (mostly because they were extremely funny looking and were way too tight on my toes).  I was convinced this was sign that I needed to find a better alternative to exercise than jogging outdoors.  I began researching gyms that were reasonably priced and had a large selection of machines and programs.  I looked specifically for yoga, pilates and spin classes, and Synergy Fitness Club fit the bill.

If you, like me, are looking for something to fulfill your exercise needs that doesn’t include running in 20 degrees and below temperature, check out Synergy Fitness Clubs.  They’ve got a great selection of classes and programs built to fit your specific needs, be it Butt, Gut & Legs, Kickboxing, or Yoga Pilates.  Or, if you’re the type who just likes to exercise on the machines, they’ve got those as well.  They’ve got an awesome promotion for four free days for both you and a friend.  If you’re hooked by then (which you probably will be), then they’ll also set you up with a student special worth investing in.

Soldier to Student…

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Today, life for me is a rather different matter compared to how it was just six months ago. My day used to begin at seven AM, with BBC Radio 4 news and the sensation of having just emerged from a deep freeze, as my mind attempted a mental inventory of the rest of my body. A partially effective shower later and I would be in the mess hall, shaved, smartly dressed and working through a stodgy breakfast, while my brain took a second stab at the physical inventory. By eight, I would be at my desk and just about through the fourth layer of security before I began a days work that was surprisingly dull, for all the significance it carried. Suffice it to say, those of us engaged in matters of National Security still despise MicroSoft’s Windows, still gossip like teenagers and still engage in petty contests to impress the boss… The best part of the day was my gym time in the evenings.

From my bed, to my breakfast to my workstation, I never had to leave the site; if you worked over a weekend you might not get ‘outside the wire’ in two weeks or more with a gym, a bar, a church, social activities and a life where your colleagues, are your friends, are your neighbors – it can be a true fishbowl. And I guess it was not so different from university life, in some respects – though the timings are offset by at least three hours or more! Where it does start to get different is the world around you. When I get up now I don’t start running through the strict timings of my day, I just try to recall the ones that matter. Instead of all eighteen hours of my conscious existence being accounted for, it’s two hours, every other day. The freedom gets perplexing sometimes, but it only takes about a week and half before you completely abandon your daily shaving regime, stop fussing over the shine on your shoes and even contemplate the necessity of a morning shower. Not so much de-institutionalized, rather re-institutionalized back into being a student, I have gleefully abandoned almost every element of my old life, bar one. After eight years of it, I cannot bare to miss my exercise.

With a host of options in a city like New York – only when you’ve spent ten bewildered minutes in front of three drinks coolers trying to work out the specific character of your thirst, can you really appreciate the majesty of a true consumer culture – finding a gym is technically easy and practically impossible. Normally, I would go to the university gym, but that’s not necessarily for everyone. The gym is always busy, and I’m getting past being an undergraduate by… well, I’m past being an undergraduate. As someone who’s been fit all their life, and in a professional capacity, I really wanted a little more. So, after a week of free trials and footwork, I finally settled on Crunch, near Union Square.

Easy

For me, running in NYC is almost a total non-starter. Yes, you can go out to the Park, or along the rivers, but I don’t live near any of those. I once ran a 10k in the Afghan desert, and that was less daunting, and more effective, than trying to run while constrained by New York traffic, so a good range of machines I can always get to makes all the difference. The weights more than matched my needs but the real difference was the classes. In the Army, you don’t just go out and run, or do push-ups in lines. We were always pretty good about mixing up fitness and providing different challenges and I still much prefer to vary my workout as often as possible, so getting to sign up for a different thing each week keeps me in good nick, and keeps me interested each session. It’s a lot better than just going down on your own and slogging through a routine you clipped from a magazine, or worse, just trailing round the equipment and giving it a bash. Having someone lead you through your exercise makes you work harder and better, and a trainer is just as good as a military PT – though I do get nostalgic for the name calling sometimes!

Hard

Whilst it seems a little extravagant to join a gym, there are deals to be had, particularly as a student. If it seems like something you’d want to get into, check out this deal on Crunch Gyms. They have a great offer across the summer when school is closed, so if you’re in the city over the summer, go for it.

Relaxation: A Past Time

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

A sigh of relief, left my body, as I rested my head on my soft pink pillow and flipped the channel to Criminal Minds (even though I’ve seen every episode at least three times). New to the 21 club, not to mention I’m just four months away from graduation aka the real world, one would imagine that I would jump at the chance to immerse myself into the facade of Friday night. With adulthood heading my way, one would say that my future includes college loans and nights out which are far and few in between. Yet instead I found myself longing to be in a place that didn’t include bright lights, colorful flashes, loud music, a dance floor or big crowds in numbers I couldn’t even attempt to count. I wanted to be in my bed, a place which has become very foreign, to do something that has become rare, relaxing.

From the moment we step out the door onto the streets of New York, The hustle and bustle of the city is engraved in our minds at an instant. We are constantly on the run, trying to match the heartbeat of the city that never sleeps, all in an attempt to find our own pulse. And then you turn 18, and off to college you go. We sprint into “college student” mode desperate to fulfill all which makes the experience: education, work, and oh yes, that thing called fun. You turn into an adolescent determined not to cheat yourself in either area because as students we work hard, and whoever said you couldn’t have it all?

Credit: http://www.stress-management-for-peak-performance.com/meditation-for-anxiety.html

We have time for everything else, juggling school and work, and of course a night on the town with the girls. But why not time for relaxing? Is it a fear that it may provoke laziness or is it a fear that we may actually enjoy it and long to make it a hobby. Relaxation is a thing which often seems to be apart ofAmerica’s past time. It has been written out of the routine of our daily lives. Something that is essential to our well being has become the rarest of them all. For some, relaxation is sitting in a quiet place with no outside interruptions, or brushing off the dust on the piano that hasn’t been played in years, or simply indulging in a hobby that has gotten away from them. And then you have good old fashion resting: laying in bed, lounging around, easing your mind, and relieving the stress from your body. Why not take it even further and venture out to a spa, a place that not only puts your mind at ease but your body as well. Besu Salon and Day Spa offers a great package for students which includes a free relaxing Swedish massage, with the purchase of BeSu Signature Spa Facial, a free mini “pick me up” spa facial with the purchase of a full leg and bikini wax and tons of other packages at a discounted rate for students.

It is easy to feel lost, overwhelmed and stressed throughout one’s journey of college and on the road to adulthood, but through it all we mustn’t forget to find time to relax and create a pace that allows us to do so. I was a little more than half way through my third episode of the mini marathon and I have never felt more satisfied with my decision to stay in on a Friday night. I rolled over to go to sleep, and the final words I released into the night’s air were “I should do this more often”.

The art of “Hygiene”

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

In society today appearance is everything; ever heard of the quote “Don’t judge a book by its cover?” Nowadays, society is forced to look at someone and come up with the notion of who the person is and where they’re from. Good thing, as students we have mastered the art of taking care of ourselves and our appearance. The art of “Hygiene.”

Hygiene is the quintessential must for a healthy body; maintaining it in your everyday life will most importantly prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Many people are very conscious of their hygiene; it is what will help in the process of others judging your book by your cover (majorly). The better we’re presented the more assured we are of showing an image that reflects our personalities. With bad hygiene, let’s just say you won’t want to experience it.

Hygiene is what can make or break a person; as students, though it’s easy to wake up fifteen minutes before class and throw on yesterday’s outfit, it’s important to look somewhat decent. You don’t know who will end up as the class guest speaker while you’re sitting in a pair of torn up dirty jeans and yesterday’s underwear. Of course, smelling good comes along side hygiene and is a must. You can’t impress someone with nasty smelling breath, and an odor coming from your body; wear a welcoming scent as to not scare people away. Grooming, just like smelling good will help on your approach. Growing out a month full of facial hair without the proper grooming will have more running away from you then getting close to you. Long Story short, Hygiene is a MUST!

If you need help with hygiene, I will like to welcome you to Beauty & Youth Spa. Beauty & Youth Spa is a Full Service Salon and Spa for both males and females; it is a place where you’ll find a blend of great quality service. You can experience an Eastern European Spa, with services ranging from nail therapy, skin care, and assortment of body treatments; such as: laser treatments, and waxing.

Open seven days a week from 10:00 AM till 9:00 PM, Beauty & Youth is conveniently open for your every needs. With friendly staff that pays the utmost attention to detail and who keep all of their customers leaving satisfied and coming back for more of the services they offer.

Hey ladies ever needed a quick and easy way to take off the unwanted hair “down there?” Beauty & Youth offers a Brazilian wax used with painless wax that’ll leave you with nothing; both easy on your bikini area, and your money.

As a special offer for its Grand Opening, Beauty and Youth will give students a special spa package. $25 dollars for a unique chocolate manicure and pedicure, $35 Brazilian Wax, and 1/2 OFF all hair salon services with valid coupon and student ID. Coupon below.

Lovely Weather but Feeling Under?

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

The weather has been absolutely lovely these past few days, reaching almost spring temperatures. Unfortunately I have noticed with the spikes in temperatures also came a rousing wave of complaints from people falling sick. Is there really a correlation between drastic changes in temperature and the number of sick people?

It isn’t the temperature of the weather that makes people sick when it all of a sudden feels like spring at the end of January. New weather, new winds essentially, bring in new pollens and pollutions. New things in the environment trigger allergic reactions. So the warmer weather does not mean that you will necessarily be safer from getting sick. Warmer, cramped environments, such as when everyone is hanging out together in a room during the cold days provide a friendly environment for bacteria. You are more likely to get sick from your best buddy than cold weather outside.

In a different scenario, drastic changes in weather do directly impact asthma sufferers. The air pressure, temperature and humidity affect the sensitve nerve endings the lungs, which can result in coughing and breathing problem.

There has been a bug going around my neighborhood and it is safe to say that the weather had no impact other than forcing people to stay inside one cold day and interact with others who were sick. If you are not an asmtha sufferer, than the only reason why you would get sick is allergies and traveling bugs. So to avoid these traps, when its cold, don’t stay in a small cramped area, especially if someone nearby is coughing their lungs out. Watch out for bugs and pollen and keep track of your health regardless. Vitamin C is a beauty and I take it along with Citron tea (which can be found in asian markets) to help soothe the throat and get more vitamin C boost.

If you are unfortunate enough to get sick, aside from more vitamin intake what I do is eat cleaner foods. You can still eat out and enjoy company, but oily or rich foods no matter how tasty they look might disagree with your stomach. Personally, I get a craving for soup and sushi when I am feeling under the weather. A strange mix I know, but having clean food does a world of difference.

For vegetarians, non-vegetarians, sushi lovers, and for those who are 21+ sake lovers, try Cho Cho San for amazing hand rolls and $10 all you can drink sake.

STAY FIT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

My favorite part of the holiday season is most definitely the food. As a poor person living in New York City without access to an adequate kitchen, spice rack, or more than one pan, most of my meals consist of Ramen noodles and peanut butter. (Don’t worry; not necessarily together!) So I’m always pleased when Thanksgiving and Christmas roll around. Not only am I able to meet with family and friends, I am able to sit down to a great meal without much taken out of my paycheck. This Thanksgiving, my mother and I stuffed ourselves with stuffing and more. We had all the traditional *stuff* (sorry, I’ll stop with the stuffing repetition): turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, veggie casserole, and pumpkin pie for desert.

I hadn’t eaten all day to leave my stomach empty for this meal, and needless to say my stomach was more than full afterwards. Of course, right on the heels of this enormous meal comes the Christmas meal, and all that holiday gorging in between. (I remember in our house, my mom used to bake a new batch of cookies every week until Xmas.)

It’s a common fact that people gain more weight over the holidays. Conveniently, the next holiday is New Year’s Eve, when they resolve to shed pounds for the coming year.  But is there a way to avoid the holiday weight gain in the first place, while also enjoying your favorite traditional foods? Of course! The answer is simple (you just have to motivate yourself): exercise.  New York City offers a myriad of ways to get your daily dose of Vitamin Ex. You can take a jog in Central Park. You can go rowing on the Hudson River. You can take a yoga class!

Head down to Bikram Yoga Manhattan at any of their locations in Chelsea, Soho, or Greenwich Village. Unlike many other forms of exercise, yoga benefits both the body and the mind.

If yoga doesn’t interest you (or if you consider yourself too masculine to don those tight yoga pants), then consider joining a fitness club. Fitness clubs offer a social setting where you can also shed pounds. Considering becoming part of Synergy Fitness Club, who’s motto is: “One Life. Live Well.” They offer classes in boxing, martial arts, aerobics, and so much more.

As you can see, there are so many ways to get fit this holiday season (while also scoring a great deal with these coupons!) Now you can sit down to that big meal guilt-free. Go on, take another piece of mom’s home-made apple pie. You won’t get another slice until next season!

How To Get Through Projects (and other stuff) Relatively Stress-Free

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Right now, most of you are probably going through midterms.  This is the first indication in the semester that things have gotten serious.  Whether it’s an exam, a project, or a giant paper, your midterm will most likely make up a huge chunk of your grade.

Now, you probably have that project or paper on your mind right now.  Believe me, it can seem like there’s some huge monster behind you, looking down and getting ready to eat you.  But it doesn’t have to be like that.  All you gotta do is these few things:

1. Start Early

I know, I kind of sound like a broken record at this point, but it really is a good idea.  I’m not saying you should try to finish your

project the first week it’s given.  That would be impossible (or at least

inadvisable).  Just start a few things, like what you’re project or paper is going to be about, or how it’s all gonna be organized.  By starting early, you sort of motivate yourself to get things done sooner.  I guess you can say you’re putting your foot through the door.

Figuratively, or course! Please don't actually try to kick through a door!

2. Don’t cut corners

If time is of the essence, you might be tempted to make a few mistakes and not fix them.  You might think, “Eh, I can let that slide.  The teacher won’t notice!”  You wanna know what happens when you do cut corners?  THIS!

"Maybe the boss won't notice."

It’s NEVER a good idea to let mistakes just sit there.  This is gonna be a huge part of your grade, so you don’t want to risk failing the whole thing just because of one stupid mistake.  Plus, remember this; when applying for jobs or grad schools, your professors might serve as good reference.  Do you really think he or she will give you a good recommendation if you are seen doing the bare minimum?

3. Don’t stress it

This may sound like a contradiction to the earlier “don’t cut corners” lecture, but this last bit is really important.  Some of you will just put your project off until the last minute and not even think about it until you think you really need to, but there’s also some of you who will stress about it day in and day out.  Let me just tell you, relax.

Being like this is never helpful

There’s an old story about Napoleon.  He was running late for an opera, and he told his wife, “Dress me slowly, for I am in a hurry”.  Do you know why he said that?  Because he knew that when you rush things in a panic, you will eventually make mistakes.  The moral is to take time to do things right, but it can also apply to stress in midterm projects.

You will feel overwhelmed, there’s no way around it.  You’re going to have a lot of work to do in what looks like very little time.  At this point  you’ll want to panic; you’ll scream and cry and want to kill someone.  But before you do any of that, take a step back, breathe in, breathe out, and relax.

Don’t misunderstand; I’m not saying that you shouldn’t work.  I’m just saying that you need to take time to relax.  Stress is never helpful, and if you’re stressed doing this project, you’re not going to have a good outcome.  What’s worse, stress can have several adverse effects on your health.  You don’t want to suffer a heart attack over one big project, do you?  I thought not.

Approach one problem at a time.  Don’t overwhelm yourself with everything at once.  Make sure you don’t rush into things, otherwise your grade (and your health) will suffer.  But most importantly; relax once in a while.  Lie down for a bit.  Drink a nice cup of coffee.  Listen to some smooth jazz.  If you can think of anything else that helps you relax, do it!

You probably won't win a Nobel Prize, but at least you'll get a good grade!

Let me make this clear; I am NOT a teacher.  I am not a guidance counselor, or an academic adviser, or any school official.  I am a student just like you.  I’ve been through all the stuff you’re going through, and I now know what to do when faced with a project like a midterm.  Will these three steps get you an A?  Maybe, maybe not.  I can’t be 100% certain.  However, I can be sure that if you follow these three steps, you’ll do a lot better than if you never read this post!

And hey, once you finish your project, maybe you can go and enjoy a Goodburger!

Choosing the Right Vegan Vitamins

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

Use this guide to make sure your vitamins are as cruelty-free as you are.

Since not everyone is perfect and eats balanced meals containing every single necessary nutrient required by the body for peak performance, once-daily multi-vitamins help fill in the nutritional gaps left by a diet of regular food. Unfortunately, most vitamin brands bind their pills together with animal ingredients like gelatin, and they also market certain nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids in the form of animal products like fish oil. However, there are plant-based sources for all necessary vitamins and minerals, and they are becoming more readily available in stores as they have already been on the Internet. Here is a guide to finding the right vitamins for your lifestyle.

1. Do more than read the label.

Labels are required to list ingredients but not their sources. Though gelatin is usually made from animal bones, it can also be made from plants, and some companies don’t bother specifying which kind is used on the bottle. Vegan brands usually indicate that they are vegan somewhere on the label, with or without the rabbit/V logo, but when in doubt, do some research on the Internet. Even if the company’s website doesn’t mention whether they are cruelty-free, chances are a fellow vegan has written a formal letter asking for information and posted the response on a forum.

2. Take (for starters) a multi-vitamin, and tailor the rest to your needs.

Downing a handful of vitamins every day can make anyone feel like a grandparent with a seven-day pill organizer. To start with, every person should take a once-daily multi-vitamin that includes a high percentage of the daily-recommended intake of major vitamins and minerals. Decide whether your normal diet contains a sufficient amount of iron before choosing between vitamins with or without iron added.

Other pills can be taken at your discretion. It’s advisable for women to take calcium supplements, and many people don’t get enough omega-3 fatty acids through their food. Analyze your diet and decide where you can supplement and where you can change your eating habits to avoid another pill.

3. Shop smart.

Vitamins have to be taken every day, so it’s a good idea not to spend a small fortune on them. This can be done while still avoiding dubiously labeled, cheap, bulk bottles. Vegetarianvitamins.com is a great source for affordable certified-vegan supplements by mail order. If you prefer to shop locally, you’ll have to utilize your online research on vitamin brands, but chances are you won’t even have to go to a specialty store to find what you need. Chain drug stores have extensive vitamin selections, or you can take advantage of coupons for independent drug stores like Whitney Chemists. Scroll down to find a Campus Clipper coupon for %10 off.

Even if you feel like you’re in great shape, taking a dietary supplement every day can increase your body and brain’s potential. Make the extra effort to ensure you’re performing the best you can, and take your vitamins!

Endorphins

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

When I started college, I had the same fears as everybody else: will I be able to handle my class work? Will my roommate and I get along? And most importantly, will I make friends?! But after settling into my routine d finding a group of people I love to hang out with, one college horror still haunted me: the Freshmen Fifteen.

Although my high school years had been filled with volleyball and other recreational sports, in college I suddenly stopped exercising. I didn’t even have the long walks to school like I had in high school, and having an unlimited meal plan definitely didn’t help. In October I finally got my act together and headed to the gym.

I had all the regular reasons for going—stay fit, lead a healthy lifestyle, stress reduction, etc. But after my first day I discovered an entirely new reason for going to the gym: endorphins. Cardio activity gave such a boost to my mood it was incredible. Leaving the gym I couldn’t help but smile at how great everything was—the sky, the people around me, the feeling of doing something great for my body. Although I had started going to the gym just because it was healthy, it turned into something much more personal, a form of medication in a sense. It’d lift my spirits when the long winter days seemed to drag on, or put a smile back on my face when classes or social drama tried to wipe it off.

Endorphins are a neurotransmitter released during exercise (as well as during times of excitement, pain, danger, the consumption of spicy food, love, and more) and create a feeling of happiness. I called it ‘self-medication’ before because it’s like taking an instant anti-depressant, yet naturally—and legally.

I know you’ve heard all the reasons for why you should exercise more before: it reduces health risks, improves brain functions, etc. But try exercising for endorphins instead; it might be more motivating than attempting to avoid that heart attack when you’re 60. Your school is a great place to start, colleges often have free gyms available, and free or cheap classes that you can take if you want something more than a treadmill. Public gyms around New York also have great deals for the summer and/or for students, so don’t be afraid to try those out. Synergy Fitness Clubs have a student promotion of $39 monthly; Crunch has a summer student special for $199 for the entire summer; New York Sports Club has an all-year student discount for $20 a month. Other gyms in the New York area include Equinox, David Barton, Bally Total Fitness, Lucille Roberts, and more. Campus Clipper also offers more discounts to a wide variety of fitness locations, so check them out.
