The art of “Hygiene”

In society today appearance is everything; ever heard of the quote “Don’t judge a book by its cover?” Nowadays, society is forced to look at someone and come up with the notion of who the person is and where they’re from. Good thing, as students we have mastered the art of taking care of ourselves and our appearance. The art of “Hygiene.”

Hygiene is the quintessential must for a healthy body; maintaining it in your everyday life will most importantly prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Many people are very conscious of their hygiene; it is what will help in the process of others judging your book by your cover (majorly). The better we’re presented the more assured we are of showing an image that reflects our personalities. With bad hygiene, let’s just say you won’t want to experience it.

Hygiene is what can make or break a person; as students, though it’s easy to wake up fifteen minutes before class and throw on yesterday’s outfit, it’s important to look somewhat decent. You don’t know who will end up as the class guest speaker while you’re sitting in a pair of torn up dirty jeans and yesterday’s underwear. Of course, smelling good comes along side hygiene and is a must. You can’t impress someone with nasty smelling breath, and an odor coming from your body; wear a welcoming scent as to not scare people away. Grooming, just like smelling good will help on your approach. Growing out a month full of facial hair without the proper grooming will have more running away from you then getting close to you. Love the Hair without the Holes in your Wallet

Hair is often times one of the first things we notice about a person. It can shape how you feel about yourself and how others see you. Are you a neat and tidy person with clean, dye-free, long locks? Are you a hipster with hair that looks like its stuck to your head due to the massive amounts of creams and sprays you use in the morning just to get to “I just rolled out of bed” look?

No matter what your style, your hair is you and you are your hair. I just went from long hair to short, cropped hair and have realized that maybe I’m a short hair kind of girl. Being in my 20’s now and having had long hair for most of my life, I decided it was time for a change and off to the salon I went. I said one word to the stylist, “short.”

This woman has been doing my hair since I was about 10 years old and for her, my hair and the word “short” have never been uttered in the same breath to her by me. She stared at me blankly and asked, “How short?” And I repeated again in the most serious tone I had ever used when speaking to her, “Short.”

And so, she put my long hair into a neat, low ponytail and chopped off my hair right above my neck. After about a half an hour and some poofing and blow drying and I was shocked by the person I was now looking at in the mirror. I never really noticed my apparently existent bone structure underneath the long hair and bangs I had.

The point is, we all love that feeling after a fresh haircut. That “I feel like I can now take on the world!” feeling. It is a feeling that happens when we take care of ourselves in ways that we tend to forget about sometimes with our busy lives.

It’s little things like buying a bold new shade of lipstick, or a haircut. As much as we sometimes hate to admit it, how we look on the outside really does make a difference with how we feel on the insides. It’s not the most important thing because a sense of humor and intelligence tend to be traits people care more about rather than looks but as a full and happy person, feeling good about yourself can come from something you do just for yourself.

But let’s face it, looking feeling good about how you look can be a bit pricey. There are ways to avoid costs at the salon like washing your own hair before your appointment or requesting to not get your hair blow dried.

Eating on a Budget

There are thousands of delicious restaurants all across New York City. If I had it my way, I would eat at a different restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day, so that I could taste all of the rich, diverse cuisine in the city. Unfortunately, not everywhere offers NYC student discounts.

But, I’m on a college student budget. I have college loans. Money is tight, so a lot of times, I have to eat at home.

However, eating at home isn’t a bad thing, in fact I like preparing my food and getting creative in the kitchen. I usually feel healthier eating in too, because I’m aware of the sodium and calories in everything I eat, and I can be more selective with my meals. Everyone has their “go-to” food at home– their “home base” or “comfort food.” My go-to item is the classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

 

It’s got everything you need– protein, fruit (sweet jelly), carbohydrates. Plus, if you toast the bread you get a little crunch in your bite.

Lovely Weather but Feeling Under?

The weather has been absolutely lovely these past few days, reaching almost spring temperatures. Unfortunately I have noticed with the spikes in temperatures also came a rousing wave of complaints from people falling sick. Is there really a correlation between drastic changes in temperature and the number of sick people?

It isn’t the temperature of the weather that makes people sick when it all of a sudden feels like spring at the end of January. New weather, new winds essentially, bring in new pollens and pollutions. New things in the environment trigger allergic reactions. So the warmer weather does not mean that you will necessarily be safer from getting sick. Warmer, cramped environments, such as when everyone is hanging out together in a room during the cold days provide a friendly environment for bacteria. You are more likely to get sick from your best buddy than cold weather outside.

In a different scenario, drastic changes in weather do directly impact asthma sufferers. The air pressure, temperature and humidity affect the sensitve nerve endings the lungs, which can result in coughing and breathing problem.

There has been a bug going around my neighborhood and it is safe to say that the weather had no impact other than forcing people to stay inside one cold day and interact with others who were sick. If you are not an asmtha sufferer, than the only reason why you would get sick is allergies and traveling bugs. So to avoid these traps, when its cold, don’t stay in a small cramped area, especially if someone nearby is coughing their lungs out. Watch out for bugs and pollen and keep track of your health regardless. Vitamin C is a beauty and I take it along with Citron tea (which can be found in asian markets) to help soothe the throat and get more vitamin C boost.

If you are unfortunate enough to get sick, aside from more vitamin intake what I do is eat cleaner foods. You can still eat out and enjoy company, but oily or rich foods no matter how tasty they look might disagree with your stomach. Personally, I get a craving for soup and sushi when I am feeling under the weather. A strange mix I know, but having clean food does a world of difference.

STAY FIT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

My favorite part of the holiday season is most definitely the food. As a poor person living in New York City without access to an adequate kitchen, spice rack, or more than one pan, most of my meals consist of Ramen noodles and peanut butter. (Don’t worry; not necessarily together!) So I’m always pleased when Thanksgiving and Christmas roll around. Not only am I able to meet with family and friends, I am able to sit down to a great meal without much taken out of my paycheck. This Thanksgiving, my mother and I stuffed ourselves with stuffing and more. We had all the traditional *stuff* (sorry, I’ll stop with the stuffing repetition): turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, veggie casserole, and pumpkin pie for desert.

I hadn’t eaten all day to leave my stomach empty for this meal, and needless to say my stomach was more than full afterwards. Of course, right on the heels of this enormous meal comes the Christmas meal, and all that holiday gorging in between. (I remember in our house, my mom used to bake a new batch of cookies every week until Xmas.)

It’s a common fact that people gain more weight over the holidays. Conveniently, the next holiday is New Year’s Eve, when they resolve to shed pounds for the coming year.  But is there a way to avoid the holiday weight gain in the first place, while also enjoying your favorite traditional foods? Of course! The answer is simple (you just have to motivate yourself): exercise.  New York City offers a myriad of ways to get your daily dose of Vitamin Ex. You can take a jog in Central Park. You can go rowing on the Hudson River. You can take a yoga class!

Head down to Bikram Yoga Manhattan at any of their locations in Chelsea, Soho, or Greenwich Village. Unlike many other forms of exercise, yoga benefits both the body and the mind.

 

If yoga doesn’t interest you (or if you consider yourself too masculine to don those tight yoga pants), then consider joining a fitness club. Fitness clubs offer a social setting where you can also shed pounds. Considering becoming part of Synergy Fitness Club, who’s motto is: “One Life. Live Well.” They offer classes in boxing, martial arts, aerobics, and so much more.

 

As you can see, there are so many ways to get fit this holiday season (while also scoring a great deal with these coupons!) Now you can sit down to that big meal guilt-free. Go on, take another piece of mom’s home-made apple pie. You won’t get another slice until next season!

How To Get Through Projects (and other stuff) Relatively Stress-Free

Right now, most of you are probably going through midterms.  This is the first indication in the semester that things have gotten serious.  Whether it’s an exam, a project, or a giant paper, your midterm will most likely make up a huge chunk of your grade.

Now, you probably have that project or paper on your mind right now.  Believe me, it can seem like there’s some huge monster behind you, looking down and getting ready to eat you.  But it doesn’t have to be like that.  All you gotta do is these few things:

1. Start Early

I know, I kind of sound like a broken record at this point, but it really is a good idea.  I’m not saying you should try to finish your

project the first week it’s given.  That would be impossible (or at least

inadvisable).  Just start a few things, like what you’re project or paper is going to be about, or how it’s all gonna be organized.  By starting early, you sort of motivate yourself to get things done sooner.  I guess you can say you’re putting your foot through the door.

Figuratively, or course! Please don't actually try to kick through a door!

2. Don’t cut corners

If time is of the essence, you might be tempted to make a few mistakes and not fix them.  You might think, “Eh, I can let that slide.  The teacher won’t notice!”  You wanna know what happens when you do cut corners?  THIS!

It’s NEVER a good idea to let mistakes just sit there.  This is gonna be a huge part of your grade, so you don’t want to risk failing the whole thing just because of one stupid mistake.  Plus, remember this; when applying for jobs or grad schools, your professors might serve as good reference.  Do you really think he or she will give you a good recommendation if you are seen doing the bare minimum?

3. Don’t stress it

This may sound like a contradiction to the earlier “don’t cut corners” lecture, but this last bit is really important.  Some of you will just put your project off until the last minute and not even think about it until you think you really need to, but there’s also some of you who will stress about it day in and day out.  Let me just tell you, relax.

Being like this is never helpful

There’s an old story about Napoleon.  He was running late for an opera, and he told his wife, “Dress me slowly, for I am in a hurry”.  Do you know why he said that?  Because he knew that when you rush things in a panic, you will eventually make mistakes.  The moral is to take time to do things right, but it can also apply to stress in midterm projects.

You will feel overwhelmed, there’s no way around it.  You’re going to have a lot of work to do in what looks like very little time.  At this point  you’ll want to panic; you’ll scream and cry and want to kill someone.  But before you do any of that, take a step back, breathe in, breathe out, and relax.

Don’t misunderstand; I’m not saying that you shouldn’t work.  I’m just saying that you need to take time to relax.  Stress is never helpful, and if you’re stressed doing this project, you’re not going to have a good outcome.  What’s worse, stress can have several adverse effects on your health.  You don’t want to suffer a heart attack over one big project, do you?  I thought not.

Approach one problem at a time.  Don’t overwhelm yourself with everything at once.  Make sure you don’t rush into things, otherwise your grade (and your health) will suffer.  But most importantly; relax once in a while.  Lie down for a bit.  Drink a nice cup of coffee.  Listen to some smooth jazz.  If you can think of anything else that helps you relax, do it!

You probably won't win a Nobel Prize, but at least you'll get a good grade!

Let me make this clear; I am NOT a teacher.  I am not a guidance counselor, or an academic adviser, or any school official.  I am a student just like you.  I’ve been through all the stuff you’re going through, and I now know what to do when faced with a project like a midterm.  Will these three steps get you an A?  Maybe, maybe not.  I can’t be 100% certain.  However, I can be sure that if you follow these three steps, you’ll do a lot better than if you never read this post!

And hey, once you finish your project, maybe you can go and enjoy a Goodburger!

Wild Ginger: Pan-Asian Vegan Cuisine

For years, Wild Ginger in Soho was one of my favorite places to go for a vegetarian dinner even before I was vegan. Inside, the dining room is incredibly small, but unlike most other Manhattan restaurants, the management doesn’t pack the place with as many tables as possible and make all the customers bump elbows with the blind dates next to them. If there’s anything that I dislike the most when I’m eating out, it’s having to listen to people being so awkward with each other that it makes me feel nervous for them. In contrast, Wild Ginger’s tastefully arranged tables with plenty of space between them in addition to a dark and earthy décor make the place feel cozy instead of bustlingly busy.

Personally, I think their appetizers are the best items on the menu, and they host a great variety of dumplings, including shumai and samosas. I’m also a big fan of tempeh, and Wild Ginger cooks their Satay Tempeh well and doesn’t over-sauce it. As for a main course, one can enjoy their hot or cold Asian noodles, in soup or dry, without having to worry about weird ingredients like fish sauce or meat extracts that traditional Asian restaurants may use. They also have soy protein prepared in many different styles, so whether you like it sweet and sour or black peppered, there are plenty of options for a filling mock-meat meal.

When I go, I like to customize my dinner by getting a couple appetizers and one of their salads, which are generously portioned and beautifully served with unique mixtures of ingredients. Try the Watercress Salad with avocado, beets, alfalfa sprouts, and a sesame sauce for healthy filler before you decide on which amazing dessert to order. My favorite is the Vegan Cheesecake despite how small of a portion I get because it has such a great texture without being too heavy. If I’m splitting with someone, the Peanut Butter Bomb is rich, chocolate-peanut buttery, and huge. You can even ask for a scoop of vegan ice cream on the side. The waiters are always super nice and never keep me waiting for very long no matter how packed it is. Even if I’m just getting takeout, they won’t hesitate to bring me a cup of tea when I ask (and sometimes even if I don’t).

Though the prices might be a bit steep for an everyday lunch, they offer a 15% off coupon with student ID through the Campus Clipper. Spend an Hour (Or Two) at Teany Café

I’m a big fan of cozy places that let me take my time eating a meal while I’m reading a book and sipping tea. This is exactly what I got at Teany Café in SoHo.

This vegan-friendly tea-and-sandwich paradise has enough atmosphere to make it worth frequenting without even considering the food. It’s a small place—practically a hole in the wall—but fixed up to look like a cute West Village café, complete with outdoor seating and fresh flowers on the tables. They play music inside, which isn’t everyone’s thing, but I enjoyed their selection of popularly accessible indie hits. The servers are sometimes difficult to wave over, but the food comes quickly, and what’s the rush anyway?

As for the food, I appreciated that, although they are not an exclusively vegan establishment, their menu is full of vegan options and presents them with clarity. It’s the mark of a considerate business not to only accommodate different diets, but also t0 make it easy for the customer to see her options without having to ask the server a million questions. I got the vegan BLT, and the smoky tempeh combined with Veganaise eliminated any remnants of longing for pork belly that lingered in my taste memory. They also have plenty of fresh salads and some heartier fare like macaroni and cheese, but Teany’s menu is best suited for light meals and sipping on drinks while chatting with friends.

I can’t consider a review for Teany complete without mentioning their tea selection, which they present in a separate menu book with pages and pages of different kinds of tea, 98 varieties in total. To compare, the menu they gave me for food was one double-sided sheet. To get the best value, order a pot and split it with a friend. Or just drink the whole pot yourself while reading. Pair it with one of their amazing desserts, all of them delicious, moist, and cruelty-free, and I can sit there contentedly for as long as it takes to solve an amNY sudoku. However, I wouldn’t try a New York Times crossword puzzle unless it’s the middle of the day, since I’m sure the place can get crowded on weekend evenings.
