Jersey Shore

January 26th, 2010

So who watched the Jersey Shore? I’ll wait…just admit it you watched it! You fed into the hype but so did I, and I loved every minute of it! It was insanely ridiculous, outrageous and not to mention hilarious. I’m from New Jersey and I’m proud of it, so let me tell you world just in case your wondering, NO not everyone in Jersey has blow outs, tans excessively and listens to techno. BUT, some people do I’ll admit it, and apparently they do in other places as well because there were cast members from Rhode Island, Staten Island and New York too. And although they did make a fool of themselves they are getting hip this time around and demanding compensation for season two, I believe $10,000 per episode. Pauly D is even booking gigs as a DJ, he was actually in the city this past weekend at a nightclub. I know way too much about this, i know, but give me a break the whole country has jersey shore fever. Even celebs! Leonardo Di Caprio is a GTL fan…ok i’ll stop trying to convince myself that my guilty pleasure isn’t embarrassing. Here are some great tanning coupons, Happy January!

Eyebrow Epiphany: Threading!

January 22nd, 2010

About six years ago I was exposed to something so amazing, so ground breaking, so revolutionary and ever so essential; eyebrow threading. A little dramatic? I assure you my excitement is warranted. Every girl knows the pain of plucking and the burn of waxing yet we’re sure to make our appointments every two weeks. There’s something about a manicured brow that just makes a face beautiful, isn’t there? My senior year of high school a friend of mine introduced me to threading. Like many I had never heard of the practice but her brows were immaculate from arch to length so I trusted the recommendation. Looking back I really believe this was one of the top five defining moments in my life…OK, maybe top ten. The stylist used a thread, yes like a needle and thread, to shape and define my brows. It was amazing! Threading hurt way less and was much less annoying than plucking, and the stylist only used a small amount of wax to clean up the stray hairs. I was instantly converted and I am proud to say have been six years sober of plucking and waxing, thank you for your support. But in all seriousness I’ve found the biggest pain is finding a good place. While threading has become more popular now it’s still relatively a word of mouth kind of thing so here are my recommendations, Salon Success on East 14th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues and Look’s Threading also on East 14th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. Both salons also provide waxing and facial services and for college students on a budget it’s great! Eyebrow threading is a mere $6 with a student ID and coupon found in your campus clipper magazine plus additional savings on beauty treatments. Trust me you’ll never look back!

Saving A Lot on Traveling

November 12th, 2009

I am so excited and blessed to report that my mom just yesterday asked me if I would come home for Thanksgiving. This is not a gift I normally receive. I haven’t been out of Manhattan for any college Spring Breaks and I haven’t seen a Thanksgiving dinner in front of me since I was seventeen. She offered to pay for my ticket as my Christmas present, when I found the cheapest round-trip option. After booking on VirginAmerica.com (Expedia.com and Priceline.com show decent packages, but really do not have the best one-way prices, and therefore present far more expensive round-trip options than the sources themselves. Although, American Airlines’ quotes were outrageous outside the bargain websites. Try the airline site first, and then Expedia, is my conclusive advice.) – I’m lucky enough that Virgin flies for cheap from New York to LAX. You’re going to have an entirely different list of prices with less popular/busy airports – I’m all set to finish up my papers and research I have to do this week, and get packing!

Then I’ll come to the morning of, and I’ll be so ready to cart myself out the apartment doors and grab a cab and go. But I know now how much that will cost. $45 for the trip to JFK. Plus tip. Which makes it $60 (tipping nice drivers well is something I believe in. I think they’re very important to this city). If I’m smart, and I think about saving some of that 60 for something else I want, all I have to do is not actually take a cab. I can take the subway if I bring a smaller amount of luggage, or I can just take a shuttle and save like $20 without spending any extra hassle. Or bothersome lugging. That’s where we come in!! We bring you Supershuttle.com (and 2 coupons!)

Supershuttle.com for fare quotes from any zip codes to any airport

Hit up the website and put in your zip code. From my neighborhood, in the East Village, it will cost me alone $23.00 to get shuttled, with all my luggage, to JFK. And if I have friends traveling the same day, they’ll only have to pay $10 each. Both prices are way less than $45 + tip!! We’re also giving you 10% off (so -$2.30 for me). Or if your fare is less, use the coupon in our magazine for $2 off.

T-Poutine: A Unique Foreign Cuisine, from a Not-So-Far-Away Land

November 12th, 2009

Wikipedia says, “Poutine (Quebec French pronunciation Pronunciation-of-Poutine ˈputsɪn) is a dish consisting of French fries topped with fresh cheese curd, covered with brown gravy and sometimes additional ingredients.”

So, I have actually been to Montreal, and I have actually eaten authentic poutine there! I ate a lot of it, scarfed it quickly, and was in the mood for some good eatin’ – which it delivered (meaning I wasn’t just tasting it for the heck of it). Poutine is one of those things that you know you could make or eat anywhere, but that you barely ever actually think about or taste. We kind of associate gravy with Turkey or Mashed potatoes all the time. We kind of associate cheese curds with – well, what do we associate cheese curds with? I can’t actually claim to know the answer to that one… maybe, rural, dairy-farming, excess product that becomes snack? I do not claim to be any sort of authority on that topic! Anyway, we don’t think “Frenches ‘n’ gravy,” much like we don’t think “chips ‘n’ vinegar,” as the Irish and English do. But I can report firsthand, and even think I know you can imagine, that French fries taste amazing with gravy. I really recommend trying them in New York City, because I know T-Poutine has an awesome reputation here, and the reason why is because they actually do taste quite like Quebec’s famous cuisine! You can’t go wrong with T-Poutine. And now you have our coupon, so no excuses to not try that sort-of-exotic dish you’re curious about when you’re down on the Lower East Side.

Tpoutine

Seriously.. must... taste.... it!

Must..taste....

Also (second opinion!),
Serious Eats New York says of T-Poutine, “T-Poutine is packed on weekend evenings, but during the weekdays, it’s frequently empty. Those are the times when I like this place —quiet and with plenty of seating.”

Showing Friends a Time

November 6th, 2009

Senior year is about the time when I’m loving my city for all of its unique quirks, and I also can’t deny that I’m itching to see my geographically spread-out friends more often – I miss them. The great thing about Manhattan is that no American-born, or maybe even Earth-born, college-aged person can deny their interest in visiting this famous city. Even if laid-back Californians never want to move, trust me, they consider New York City entrancing and beautiful (all the way from their view of it thousand of miles southwest). People want to shop here, walk Central Park, learn why Brooklyn and the Bronx are so well-known. People want to see snippets of how the economy of America is stimulated by so much that goes on just within our island’s 22 square miles. Manhattan just is enthralling.

Basically, it’s time to tell your friends to stop dreaming, and just visit already! I do. If anybody can help them float the ticket price (booking 3 months in advance will save about $300 on a round-trip ticket from L.A.), being here for a week will not break their bank. And I’m serious. If they can withstand the lure of the (overrated) Topshop that opened last spring in Soho, they do fine with just a few hundred for spending money and emergencies.

And lodging! I’m sure that’s their second fiscal fear after flying. Manhattan hotels notoriously charge sky-high prices – even when you think them not nearly nice, clean, historic, cute, or legendary enough to do so! Tell your homies to stay in a hostel. For about $35 per person, per night, Jazz Hostels can’t be beat. Maybe you have to share a bathroom, but think about how much you save and where you can step out to when you leave to explore New York anyway! Jazz Hostels are located on beautiful Central Park West, in Times Square, in Stuyvesant Square near NYU, and several places uptown near Columbia University and Hunter College.

And then I get jealous over where they're staying...

Fancy and Tasty Dining, Without Paying Big

November 6th, 2009

I know so many New Yorkers and East Coasters who love their Italian food, and many who so cherish their Italian heritage. The thing about Italians being so abundant in NYC, though, is that pizza, pasta, vino and antipasto is everywhere. There are so many Italian restaurants and it is hard to find one you’ll really appreciate unless you have had it recommended to you by someone else who knows Italian food well. So, even though I’m not an expert, I am very meticulous with my food critiquing – in other words, trust my judgment! I’ve tasted my fair share of over-cooked pasta, bad wine, and antipasto that just doesn’t taste right. In conclusion, it makes me very happy to bring you the awesome menu at ‘Inoteca! This place exists up on 3rd Ave and down on Rivington, so whether you’re hitting up the Lower East Side nightlife, or further north with friends, definitely step in here for a delectable dinner and some nice companion wine, if you’re legal. Entrees are not too expensive, ranging from $11-$18, and our coupon gives you 15% off your whole dinner (so go on with that wine and appetizer, girl!).

Yum!

I love the mushroom Insalata and pesto Bruschetta. And if you just happen to be trying to learn Italian, get a leg-up on your practice with the menu and waiters!

Relaxation is a Must, for Us

October 29th, 2009

Sometimes I consider how my joints, back, knees, hands, everything feel and I wonder if folks who make time for spa visits or simple massages every once in a while feel just a little less stiff, a little less cracky, a little less tight in the upper…and lower back. I’ve had one professional massage in my life, so I know my midterm-entrenched student self is way over due for a spa day. A cheap, simple one – I’m not talking about gold-priced treatments stereotypical Upper East Side dames are up to when they’re tired from too much billionaire schmoozing. In short, I’ve decided to get treatments at Vada Spa. I will report back. In the meantime, have at these awesome deals:

I just want to talk about fashion…

October 16th, 2009

…here for a second. We’re in “The” City, for goodness sake! One of the greatest dressing cities in the world – many locals argue the greatest. But regardless of whether you care about that, you wear clothes – hope I’m right about that one – so you need to buy them. Isn’t that what we’ve all told our parents when softening debit card debates in recent years? (Actually, it isn’t for me. I use credit, which you really, really, really may want to do if you plan on ever getting an account, house, apartment, etc. At this age, we need to build our credit scores; if you don’t, you run the risk of never being granted a credit account in your twenties. I know of people :-/)

Since the age of 13, I’ve been a huge fashion enthusiast…the type that examines and critiques every runway look the day the show happens. So you can imagine my excitement upon learning that Loehmann’s department store carries Betsey Johnson, Calvin Klein, Free People, D&G, French Connection, the list goes on. If Forever 21 is your thing, great, it’s in Union Square. But these designers and brands make their clothes in higher quality. They last up to ten years rather than half of one, so finding a great piece of theirs for $10-$50 feels amazing. And when you’ve used this 20% off coupon, you’ll walk out of their with genuinely nice clothes, feeling that much more amazing.

Joan Collins tee by Free People
It’s getting cold and wintry about, so this shirt would be perfect for layering and still looking chic. Wear over a tank top of any length and color, and the design people see when you take off your coat will say, “I’m pretty and upbeat, and cutting edge.” You can layer pretty much any scarves or jackets over it as well.

DKNY Jeans Menswear Vest
Okay, this may look like a forward style (not to mention it’s “all over the spring runways,” as i can hear tyra or somebody say in an America’s Next Top Model episode), but trust me, throw one of these over a (white, black, or neutral) outfit you loved but have worn a million times, and it will make you and your aura look and feel fresh and unstoppable, I promise.

Both of the above labels, Free People and DKNY Jeans, are sold at Loehmann’s! Enjoy this coupon. Love, SM Mag.

Use this Loehmann's Coupon

Here’s a few more Clothing/Shoes coupons for advertisers I love:

Sacco Shoes is all over the city, great shoes and bags at good prices!

I wish I knew this deal existed earlier, I never got things hemmed cause I feared the price! Awesome!

Space: Sheltering Ourselves

October 3rd, 2009

Live Comfortably- without Breaking Your Bank

When I get a twinge of syntax-block, I stare out at the grey roofs with black, green, or grey doors south of the 17th floor office I’m writing from. The only grey rectangle that holds up a human right now is the one three blocks south that held him/her up yesterday as well. Why is this man/woman in a tan jacket and black pants and shoes lounging under the sky while nobody else is? While you ponder that question I’m going to go on and on about myself – surprise, I’m sure!

Technically talking about myself right now is talking about you, though. I can count with my left hand the number of students I’ve met who commute from their parents homes, so chances are you either dorm or independently found yourself an abode off campus – me, the latter. I enjoyed my incoming year in NYU’s Third North well enough, but campus costs and even a highly disturbing moral issue prompted me to look elsewhere in Manhattan real estate for a living space.

NYU dormitory options for second to fourth year range from $9,212-$19,808 for the school year, including winter and spring recesses. Most of us are in class give-or-take four months in the fall and four in the spring, so a sophomore could potentially pay almost 20,000 big ones for about eight months if they want a single (own kitchen and bathroom). That divides out to $2,500 each month. My friend Amber pays $2,000 a month for her own studio, five blocks from school, with a south-facing skyline view, a doorman in her building, and no R.A. to answer to when her 21-year-old peers drink some beers. And she didn’t even pay a notoriously deal-savvy Manhattan broker to find her place. So honestly, the dorms are probably overcharging you by a landslide anywhere on the island, and definitely are if you go to NYU and don’t qualify for low cost housing.

So a few strategies are to search craigslist.org for shares, to check out an apartment building’s listings in person, or to know sombody who has a room available and like the person enough to live with them. If you’re lucky enough, a few of your friends may even decide to move into a 2-4 bedroom place together (this will save you all money because the utilities will be one bill and each person’s rent usually decreases with the more bedrooms the place has).

Personally, I went the craiglist route. I’ve been living in the East Village (not in Alphabet City east of Tompkins Square Park, but actually in the middle of the cute, historic village laiden with sweet restaurants, vintage shops and bars) for about 9 months.. and I even moved out for the summer and back in. We have a marble kitchen and bathroom, large living room with an exposed brick wall, jacuzzi tub, and roof deck. My bedroom is small but I pay less than $1,500 per month + utilities (electric and internet). Steal! The idea I’m trying to pass on is that you can find something affordable on your on. Step up and defeat the dorm-money-machine and you will personally and professionally grow from it. You will learn about New York real estate and brokers, even if you never use one. If you plan on making your career in this city, the quirks and issues you’ll realize by renting will be knowledge you learn now that you won’t have to struggle with once you’re a recent grad, trying to find footing in the harsh New York job market! Just sayin’.

Food: Preserving Ourselves

October 3rd, 2009

Great coupon for groceries!

Eat Healthy- Don’t Lose Sight of Nutritional Value

An important part of my daily routine is balancing my meal components for the day, starting by planning at breakfast time. I wish I weren’t obligated to, but with my busy schedule keeping me out of my apartment for sometimes twelve hours on end, I plan what type of food I’m going to eat ahead of time. For example, if I have a yogurt (always on sale and “Low-fat”) in the morning before class, and wash it down with some natural fruit juice (V8 and Tropicana are sold at every grocery store), then I plan on eating more vegetables and bread after my first class.

A grocery store I didn’t even know about until i read Student Maximus is Associated Supermarket in Manhattan. The prices are great and student coupons are in the magazine.

(Here’s where I might differ from you in two ways: I’m a vegetarian and I don’t have a school meal plan. But I’ll elaborate more on those later.) I keep vegetables in the fridge at all times – these frequently include sun dried tomatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, kalamata olives and lettuce. I have pita bread and low-carb wraps of various grain count and flavor. Sounding appetizing? Maybe if your a raw-fooder or vegan… I’m not either so I do want to address protein and efficient ways I recommend to get yours. Healthy protein comes in said yogurt, soy milk with cereal, and nuts, like maybe a bag of almonds in a schoolbag. And breathe easy, egg lovers, because I’ve got your hard-boiled egg cooking tips right here!

These babies will last you three to six breakfasts or lunches and they taste great with so many sides and condiments. I’m providing a college-y recipe for boiling eggs quickly and easily below. Just peel and eat with salt and/or pepper if you like them simple, or when you feel adventurous (I say “when” because I know you will, and you’ll thank me after), eat them on a bagel with hot sauce! (Add cream cheese and grab fruit juice et voila! Five food groups!)

Some college students may never even have used a stove before. I’ll admit that I needed someone to show me how to light the stove sometime within the same years that I was smoothly 2,000-ing SAT tests.

They look and taste and treatcha good!

They look and taste and treatcha good!

Hard-boiled Eggs (for Dummies!) Recipe

Supplies:
6 of your 12 large free-range organic brown eggs
1 metal pot, like a saucepan, with lid
1 tap water faucet
1 gas stove (I don’t know about you fancy electric people. ;))

Directions:
-Place all six eggs carefully in the pot
-Fill the pot with tap water to about an inch above the eggs
-Put the lidded pot on one of the stove coils
-Find the corresponding (front or rear, right or left) stove knob and turn to Light
-Turn the knob to Hi and let eggs heat until you see bubbles (boiling water) when you pick up the lid, Turn Off
-If you like your yokes light yellow with grey on the outside, let them sit in the water for 10-15 minutes
-If you like your yokes just done and a brighter yellow, let them sit for less than 5 minutes
-Drain the hot water by carefully turning the pot over a sink. I add cold water gradually and then take the hot eggs out by hand and put them on a small paper towel or just on the counter (*conserve as much paper as possible!)
-You can place them in cold water until you like their temperature or just dry them off and then refrigerate. I put them back in the carton and make note of which 6 eggs are boiled and which aren’t (or else I eventually run into a literally sticky situation).
