Niche-ing New York City: Embracing Your Talent

Talent is natural, yes. It’s inherent, born-in, perhaps passed down. But it is not always easy. In many cases our talent must be drawn out of us, through practice, exposure, experience. In the past articles we have learned how to expose ourselves to new – and affordable – genres of talent, and, once we’ve found our talent, how to set a foundation for success in that niche field. But how do we move from point A to point B? Before the acting conservatory or the internship, we need ways to nurture our talents and find a safe and motivating community in which to do so. I sat down with two friends who have been an important part of my community since I first set foot in New York City to talk about how those around us have helped us find and develop our talents.

Leah Eastwood is double majoring in Psychology and Film at Pace and planning to pursue master’s degrees in Psychology and Business. She always had a passion for Film, having directed, filmed, and edited movies with her siblings and friends since she was seven, but she never truly considered film as a career path. It was in a high school drama class, when she had turned in a professional-level short film as her final, that one of her favorite teachers opened her up to the possibility and urged her to further her studies in Film.

However, Leah felt the need to hedge her bets. She knew Film was her talent and her passion, but she also knew it would be a difficult field to succeed in. Having enjoyed and excelled at AP Psychology in high school, she decided she would major in Psych and pursue a career in therapy. As a rising senior in college, though, those lines have blurred. While her Psych classes have solidified her decision to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the field, she has found that her production classes and the hands-on learning have simultaneously allowed her to develop her skills and to seriously consider a Film career. Behind the camera is where she is happiest, and while she still wants to help people, she has found that Psych and Film work together beautifully to create meaningful media with moving messages. 

Caroline Lattanzio moved to New York City from Arkansas, a place devoid of the same kind of creative spirit and diversity in talent that we enjoy here. In her small college prep school, she wasn’t exposed to the same kind of artistic and alternative opportunities that many of us were. To add fuel to the flame, she never really excelled in her classes, either. There was nothing and no one to show her that failing math didn’t mean the end of the world, and there was no activity or outlet to turn to after class. In a particularly tough time, she sat on her floor crying, afraid of failing, even if she didn’t know what she might fail at. Her mom asked her, “What do you actually like to do? What makes you happy?” 

The answer was easy: music. Playing it on the guitar, yes, but also listening to it, experiencing it. She thought back to her first ever concert – Taylor Swift, before ticket prices were what they are now – and remembered how meaningful it was to her, knowing that she wanted to be a part of delivering that experience to others. This is how Caroline landed on Arts and Entertainment Management, a business program on the outskirts of the business department at Pace. It combines perfectly her talent in simply talking to people, advertising herself and charming artists and customers, with her passion in music and concert experiences, and has only helped her develop her skill and knowledge in these areas.

In the next article, we will discuss the community that Leah and Caroline have fostered since starting at Pace, and how they have helped each other grow as people, develop their skills, find solutions to the toughest problems, and connect with an ever-expanding web of similarly- and differently-talented people. It only takes one experience, one person telling you for the first time that you’re good at something or asking you seriously what you enjoy doing, to jumpstart a career, a talent, a life. Our advice: open yourself up to those experiences, those people, and take the risk. Listen closely to those who know you best and learn from them what you might be blind to in yourself. It could change your life.

Self-Love and Your Job

Self-love and your career. What an intriguing thought. How does what you do for a living impact the way you love yourself?

Well, are you doing what you’re doing because you love it, or because it is easy, convenient, or pays the bills? I think many of us, myself included, get caught in the ease and convenience of complacency in life. It is too easy to get comfortable wherever we are and not want to leave, to remain complacent because your job provides you with (maybe even just barely) financial stability. Personally though, I’ve always said that if I start to feel too comfortable, it is time to move on to something else-there’s no opportunity for growth where we are overly comfortable. We are simply stagnant here. This space is useless when it comes to personal growth.

An interesting thought is also that loving your job can actually impact your health. As is goes, if you love what you are doing, they say you’ll live longer! Inc. explains that happy equals healthy, good jobs fuel community, good work allows for fulfillment, enjoying your job means less stress and anxiety, and being challenged means less boredom.

Further explained…one study found that older people who are overall happier and in better moods are 35% less likely to die within five years, people who are more social live an average of 3.7 years longer than their less-social counterparts, psychologists say living with a purpose is the most important key to living a long and healthy life, stress is the top proxy killer disease today, and mental alertness keeps your brain sharp as you age.

To wrap that all up, a fruitful and fulfilling career will lead you straight to a place of greater self-love!! A job where you are enjoying your work, surrounding yourself with kindness and support, and being appreciated and respected will give you greater confidence and appreciation for yourself and what you are doing.

I believe that each of us, whether we want to admit it or not, truly desires to be successful and to do so by finding something that we love to do and thriving at it. How many people still say that there is no such thing as loving your job so much it feels like you never have to work a day in your life, though? Too many! Do you believe this? I truly believe that the idea of loving your career so that it is a fruitful and satisfying part of your life is an idea that is entirely possible to turn into a reality. Perhaps I am naive, but I really don’t think so.

You try it! If you hate your job, maybe it is time to move on to bigger and better places. If you love your job, think about how that relates to the way you feel about yourself. Are you happy? Would you be less happy with a less satisfying career? Probably. Love yourself and find a career that feeds your soul! You’ll only thank yourself.

A Student’s Guide to The Psychology of Self-Love Through Maslow’s Hierarchy

In the 1940’s Psychologist Abraham Maslow proposed the idea that human beings all have certain needs and that those needs are best arranged in a hierarchy. In time, this hierarchy was indeed coined Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

The five-tier pyramid shows Maslow’s interpretation of our needs. The bottom four levels are our deficiency needs, all of which must be met before one can reach the top level of the pyramid, known as our growth need. As the pyramid shows, our deficiency needs are then broken into basic and psychological needs. One must start at the bottom and satisfy their physiological needs before they are able to move up and satisfy their safety needs. and so on.

Once one is able to reach the top, he or she is able to finally begin trying to satisfy his or her self-fulfillment need. If successful, this will allow the person to reach a state of self-actualization. When someone reaches self-actualization, according to Maslow, they have reached their greatest human potential. It is said that only one of every one hundred people will reach self-actualization. This is because self-actualization requires some uncommon qualities, such as true honesty, awareness, objectiveness, originality, and more. Another reason self-actualization is so difficult to achieve is that many people are often too focused on satisfying their tangible deficiency needs that once they meet their esteem needs, they often then move back down and fluctuate between different levels of the hierarchy. Though we all have the potential and desire to reach self-actualization, for most people the challenges of life become too distracting, causing them to move back and forth between the different deficiency needs.

Self-love is appreciation for oneself that in part grows from actions that support our psychological growth. Hence, fulfilling Maslow’s growth need – achieving a state of self-actualization – will simultaneously increase your sense of self-love. People who have a strong sense of self-love are mindful and aware of who they are, not who others say they are. These individuals also act on what they need, not just on what they want. When you love yourself, you are able to focus on fulfilling your needs even if what you need isn’t exactly what you want. Also, someone who is able to reach self-actualization is fulfilling their full potential and purpose. When one can live with purpose and intention, they will naturally also love themselves more.

Personally, though I have always had the dream and desire to make a difference, I have more recently decided to make it a point to live with true purpose and intention. Consciously living each day with purpose will allow me to feel positive about what I am doing in life and will aid in my ability to reach self-actualization. I strive to be one of the people who is able to reach this state within my lifetime.

 

I spoke with FIT student Ashley Guillois, who didn’t realize how Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs relates to self-love. I started to explain all that you are reading now to Ashley, and now she also feels that, moving forward, it is important to aim for self-actualization. After speaking with me, Ashley feels committed to not only loving herself, but doing so by making it a goal to fulfill her deficiency and growth needs by following the tiers of Maslow’s Hierarchy.

Ashley is not only a fellow FIT student, she is also my friend, who has agreed to accompany me in a few weeks when we use our Campus Clipper booklets to get self-love pedicures!
