Move Your Body, Clear Your Mind

Thursday, July 17th, 2025

In a city that never stops moving, sometimes the best thing you can do is move right along with it. But I’ve learned that movement in New York isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. It’s about finding motion that grounds you. Whether you’re sweating through a fun fitness class, getting lost in a run along the water, or hiking in one of the city’s hidden natural oases, movement can be your anchor. It is a way to reset, refocus, and feel connected to both the city and yourself.

When I first moved to NYC, I was balancing a lot of factors. I was trying to navigate living in a big city, making friends, and managing all of my classes. When it all felt too overwhelming, I found that moving my body helped me take a step back and tackle whatever was stressing me out with a more focused mindset. My personal favorite way to move my body is running along the East River. There’s something about that stretch of waterfront that makes the entire city feel like it’s holding its breath. The path, which runs alongside FDR Drive, offers stunning views of the skyline, bridges, and water. Mornings are my favorite because there’s a calm in the air that feels rare for Manhattan. The sound of sneakers hitting pavement, the sight of the sunrise glinting off the water, and the cool breeze off the river all work together to make the world feel manageable again. Even on my most chaotic days, that run gives me the reset I need.

If you prefer a slower pace, a walk along the river is just as healing. I like to plug in a calming playlist, or sometimes nothing at all, and just take in the view. I pass dog walkers, couples, and other solo walkers who all seem to be doing the same thing: finding space in a city where space is hard to come by.

Another gem in the city is a trail called “The Ramble” in Central Park. Tucked away from the main loops and touristy areas, “The Ramble” feels like a secret garden. It’s filled with winding dirt paths, rocky steps, and trees that arch overhead like a protective canopy. You’ll often hear birds before you hear cars, which in Manhattan is saying something. I like to go there when I need to unplug completely. It’s one of the few places where I can trick myself into thinking I’m on a real hike, not surrounded by skyscrapers that are just a few blocks away. Last time I went, I even saw three baby raccoons walk in front of me as I journaled on a rock!

Here is a calming view you can get when hiking “The Ramble.”

If you are someone that prefers a more structured way to move, then fitness classes might be right up your alley. NYC offers a huge variety of workout classes ranging from spin classes to boxing and even trampoline cardio. You can also find communities in run groups or intramural sports throughout the city. If you want something really cute and healing, there is also puppy yoga. Yes, you heard me! You can do downward dog while an actual puppy lies next to you! The best part is that many of these classes offer student discounts as well!

In New York, movement is everywhere; you just have to choose which rhythm feels right for you. Let the city’s energy inspire you, but don’t forget to make it your own. When you discover a movement that soothes your mind, the city begins to feel less overwhelming and more like home.

Tasting With Thomas: Kyuramen

Sunday, March 2nd, 2025

Hey there! Welcome to the first edition of Tasting With Thomas. As an avid connoisseur of dining atmospheres, interesting flavors, and a good sweet treat, I’m excited to explore and share the affordable eats that New York City has to offer. For this first edition, my friend Eres and I made our way over to Kyuramen’s Columbia location to enjoy some creative Japanese cuisine.

As we ducked into the warmly lit eatery off Broadway Ave, Eres and I were instantly attended to despite the apparent business of the Friday evening. From the minimalist, Japanese style decorations to the private booth seating arrangements, the atmosphere of the restaurant was the perfect prelude to the notable dining experience that was to come.

Kyuramen’s inviting entrance.

We started our meal off with two Thai iced teas. While I personally was trying the drink for the first time, Eres had already proclaimed her status as a “division one milk tea critic”. After a good shake, we stabbed our straws through the plastic lid and took a sip of the refreshing milk tea. Even with Eres’ tenured taste for Thai tea, she described the drink as “Not too sweet but not too sophisticated. It’s that classic Thai tea flavor that can never disappoint.”

Our two refreshing Thai Iced Teas.

After working up our appetites with our drinks, we were ready for the generous variety of platters and entrees that Kyuramen had to offer. After some consideration, we decided to taste the Honey Comb and Yakitori Platters first. Between the chili garlic edamame, lobster & chashu salad ball, tamago egg, shrimp tempura, eel unagi, scallops, and seaweed salad, we had an incredibly diverse array of flavors to indulge in. Shockingly, those were only the bites in the Honey Comb Platter! Eres and I especially loved trying the more savory flavors like shrimp tempura and eel unagi while routinely cleansing our palette with the fresh seaweed salad.

The Honey Comb and Yakitori Platters. Lots of variety!

The Yin-Yang Bowl and the Seafood/Eel Kamameshi dishes were our main entrees for the night. The innovative design of the Yin-Yang bowl aesthetically incorporated two different broths and toppings, making it the perfect choice for customers sharing their meal. As a pescatarian, I appreciated the opportunity to enjoy the same dish with Eres without sacrificing my dietary restrictions. Both Kamameshi dishes were beautifully presented with skewers of shrimp, prawns, and eel stuck into an unsuspectingly deep dish of sushi rice, egg, and spring onions. The bottomless base of rice was the perfect compliment to the salty seafood skewers we got to pick and choose from.

The full dinner spread, including two platters, two kamameshi rice dishes, yin-yang ramen, and the matcha tiramisu.

We concluded the dining experience with the cutest presentation of tiramisu that I’ve ever seen. What’s more, Kyuramen had put their own Japanese twist on the conventionally italian dessert by flavoring it with matcha instead of espresso. We were delighted to taste the distinct herbal tones of the matcha paired with the light mascarpone cream. “ I loved that it wasn’t too rich or heavy, but more airy and sweet”, remarked Eres as we set down our spoons with satisfied smiles.

As we stepped out of our booth and back onto Broadway Ave, we couldn’t wipe those smiles off our faces. Reflecting on the delicious flavors, the aesthetic presentation, and the welcoming hospitality had us in an afterglow of appreciation throughout our walk home. We didn’t just have a good meal, we had a good experience.

BBQ Heaven

Monday, March 5th, 2012

If there’s one thing that I miss most about the South, it’s the barbeque. The smell of hickory smoke wafting through the air, sweet and tangy barbeque sauce slathered over ribs and whole roasted chickens. The fluffy cornbread. The sweat tea. THE SWEAT TEA.

Every so often I’ll have a BBQ relapse and dip into a nightmarish craving for the smoky, tangy flavors of the food I love so dearly. So, I finally dropped my judgment of NYC barbeque and walked into Dallas BBQ. Boy, am I glad I did!

For about $15 I devoured a monstrous plate of baby-back ribs, steak covered in fried onions, french fries, and a hunk of corn bread. With a bottle of barbeque sauce at my disposal, I coated my plate with flavor and ate every last bite. I could barely walk afterwards, but I was completely satisfied. Make sure you go somewhere that offers NYC student discounts so that you can get the most bang for your buck!

Now that I’ve overcome my preconceived stereotype of NYC barbeque, I’m much more eager to taste the BBQ of the north. Since I’m still on a college student’s budget I want to make sure my next BBQ escapade has some great NYC student discounts, which is why I turned to the Campus Clipper. If you love barbeque like I do, and you love student discounts, or if you’re curious about why I’m so obsessed with the tangy sweetness of barbeque, then do yourself a favor and try out New York’s Original BBQ Restaurant. Take this coupon before you go!
